Physiotherapy for groin pain
Groin pain can be complex and persistent. We are specialists in the precise diagnosis and treatment of groin-related injuries and pain. Our approach is holistic. We therefore always analyze the root cause by examining your entire functional chain. The pain is often caused by imbalances or impaired function in the hip, pelvis or lower back. By treating the whole body, we can correct the underlying problems. We combine targeted manual therapy with specific rehabilitation to ensure a sustainable return to sport.

About groin pain
Groin pain can be located in the lower part of the abdomen, the upper part of the inner thigh or around the hip joint. The groin is a complicated area anatomically, as it is composed of several joints as well as muscles and tendons. Therefore, it can also be difficult to get a specific diagnosis and cause of the groin pain. However, this does not mean that it is difficult to treat. At Copenhagen Physio, we have great success in treating groin pain based on a holistic approach. Our goal is to create free movement in the groin, pelvis, hip and lower back and restore full strength in the surrounding muscles, including the hip flexors, adductors and abdominal muscles. In this way, the vast majority of pain will disappear effectively.
Causes of groin pain
There can be many reasons why you experience groin pain. Groin pain can, for example, occur in connection with sports (read further below), during and after pregnancy or due to inguinal hernia. However, you can also experience groin pain due to a hip injury or lower back problems. It is therefore important to have the entire area examined by a physiotherapist with knowledge of groin injuries. At Copenhagen Physio, we take a thorough approach and always try to find the underlying cause of the pain. It is not enough to simply treat the symptoms. As mentioned above, the mobility of the individual joints must be examined and treated. In addition, the strength of the surrounding muscles must be assessed and restored.
Groin pain during sports
Groin pain often occurs in connection with sports. It can be acute injuries such as strains and fiber tears in the hip flexors, adductors or lower abdominal muscles. However, the pain can also have arisen over time due to muscle overload or due to reduced mobility in the hip, pelvis or lower back. For example, reduced internal rotation of the hip can cause groin pain, as it will put pressure on the nerve that supplies part of the groin. We have great success in treating groin pain by creating free mobility in the hip, pelvis and lower back and activating and strengthening the above-mentioned muscles. The gluteal muscles and the deep back muscles are also important, which is why it is important to be thoroughly examined.
"Completely pain-free."

After just one treatment with Lars, our son was completely pain-free (groin pain). 4 days later, our son was able to play at full strength again in an international competition.

Groin pain in women
Women can often experience groin pain during and after pregnancy. During pregnancy, the ligaments loosen and the increased weight from the abdomen creates greater pressure on the groin. In addition, the abdominal muscles and hip flexors have poor conditions to work under. This inactivation of the muscles can continue after pregnancy, which causes groin pain in women. The same applies to the gluteus maximus muscle, which can further cause lower back pain. Of course, you can't do anything about the structural changes that occur in connection with pregnancy. But we have great experience in strengthening and activating the muscles around the groin, pelvis and lower back.
Hip flexors and groin pain
The hip flexor is a central muscle when it comes to groin pain. The hip flexor originates from the lower back and attaches to the top of the inner side of the femur bone. The hip flexor is the most important muscle in terms of lifting the leg and bending the hip. If the muscle is weak and inactive, it can cause groin pain. In addition, it also stabilizes the lower back, which is why it can cause lower back pain if it is weak. If the hip flexor is weak, the body will try to compensate by using the next best muscles. Over time, the compensating muscles will become overloaded, which can lead to fiber ruptures and overuse injuries. At Copenhagen Physio, we have great success using muscle activation for the hip flexor to treat groin pain,
Inguinal hernia
You can also get pain in the groin from a so-called inguinal hernia. An inguinal hernia is a small protrusion of the abdominal cavity that bulges through a weak spot or opening in the abdominal wall. There are several types of hernia, but inguinal hernia is the best known. Along the groin, there can be several weak spots in the attachment of the abdominal muscles, through which the intestine can bulge out and cause an inguinal hernia. The symptoms can feel like burning, stabbing pain and discomfort in the area. Inguinal hernias are usually harmless, but can be more serious if the intestine becomes pinched and damaged. An inguinal hernia should always be examined in more detail by a doctor.
Treatment of groin pain
As mentioned above, we can treat most groin pain effectively using physiotherapy and sports physiotherapy. Most groin pain has developed over time and can be difficult to give a specific diagnosis. However, we have very good experience in treating this non-specific groin pain. Our approach is unique and aims to restore full strength and activation of the muscles around the groin, hip, pelvis and lower back. Each of them is important for a well-functioning groin. In addition, we ensure that we create free movement in the hip, pelvis and lower back, which is extremely effective in treating groin pain. When there is free movement and full strength in the muscles, most groin pain will disappear quickly and effectively.
