Physiotherapy for neck pain
We have extensive experience in treating neck pain and have helped hundreds of patients with acute and chronic neck pain. We have a special approach to treating neck pain. First, you will receive a thorough examination, where we will uncover the underlying cause of your neck pain. We will then try to create free movement and full strength in and around the neck. Below we will review the most common causes of neck pain, neck stiffness and herniated discs, as well as our approach to treating these injuries/pain.
"I can highly recommend Lars."
Alex Hooshiar
I can highly recommend Lars! I was hampered for 2 years by a herniated disc in my neck with radiation to my right arm. After 4-5 treatments the pain is gone, and I have avoided extensive surgery. I have even started strength training again.

"My warmest recommendations."
Raza Rantonen
I had pain due to osteoarthritis in my upper back and neck for over 3 years. After the first treatment I felt much better. After the second treatment I was told I didn't need to come back. I can only give my warmest recommendations.

"I couldn't be more grateful."
Catalina Vidal
I couldn't be more grateful and satisfied. I had severe pain in my shoulder and neck for two years. After only four treatments my shoulder is as good as new and my neck is perfect. It's worth every penny, no doubt.

About neck pain
In the vast majority of cases of neck pain, the doctor cannot give a specific diagnosis regarding the neck pain. However, this does not mean that it cannot be treated. With our approach to treating neck pain and sore neck, most neck pain will disappear with the correct treatment. We have great success in treating acute and chronic neck pain and can often help where other treatment has to give up. We have a sharp focus on regaining full strength in all muscles around the neck, throat and shoulder and re-establishing normal mobility in the neck, upper ribs as well as the collarbone and shoulder blade. We use muscle activation, manual treatment and are happy to supplement with exercises if necessary.
Stiff neck
A stiff neck causes pain and significantly reduced mobility in the neck. It can therefore be difficult to rotate the head to the side and make normal movements without pain. A stiff neck can be very annoying and cause limitations. A stiff neck is typically caused by the small muscles in the neck tensing up and "locking" the small joints. The reason why the small muscles tense up is typically because one of the larger muscles is weak, which is why the small muscles try to compensate by tensing up. Our treatment therefore focuses on activating the weak muscles, whereby the tension quickly decreases and mobility is normalized. A stiff neck can also be caused by reduced mobility in the upper rib, collarbone or shoulder blade.
Disc herniation in the neck
The symptoms of a herniated disc in the neck are typically neck pain and pain radiating down the arm. Many people mistakenly believe that their radiating pain down the arm is due to a herniated disc in the neck. The fact is, however, that only a small proportion of patients with neck pain and radiating pain are actually diagnosed with a herniated disc in the neck. In the vast majority of cases, the same symptoms occur due to weakness in the muscles around the neck, throat and shoulder or due to reduced mobility in the neck, ribs or shoulder girdle. Regardless of whether it is a herniated disc or not, the treatment aims to regain full strength and free movement. This will reduce and disappear the vast majority of symptoms.

Treatment of neck pain
As mentioned above, we have great success in treating neck pain. A thorough examination is a prerequisite for being able to treat your neck pain effectively. We therefore always test the strength throughout all the muscles around the neck, throat, shoulder and arm. In addition, we also examine the neck, throat, collarbone and shoulder for reduced mobility. Once we have clarified the above, we have typically also found the cause of the neck pain. This allows us to target the treatment so that it is as effective as possible. The goal is to regain full strength in all the muscles and normalize mobility. When there is full strength and free mobility, the vast majority of neck pain disappears, even if it has lasted for many years.
Neck exercises
Neck exercises can be a good supplement to treatment if you have neck pain. However, it is important to first make sure that the nerve signal to the neck muscles is fully activated. If they are not activated, you can train as much as you want without getting the desired effect. If the muscles are not activated correctly, the body will compensate and use the next best muscle for the task. This means that you risk training the muscles incorrectly and even worsening or maintaining the pain. At Copenhagen Physio, we first activate the muscles using Neuro Activation, which is the first step in the treatment. We then give specific neck exercises, which usually have a very good effect on acute and chronic neck pain.
Other causes of neck pain
As mentioned earlier, the doctor cannot give any specific cause for the neck pain in the vast majority of cases. In these cases, the causes of the neck pain must be found in the reduced strength or poor mobility around the neck and shoulders. As physiotherapists, we are very skilled at helping with this. In very few cases, neck pain is due to a herniated disc in the neck, bone fractures or arthritis. And in very rare cases, neck pain is due to cancer or infections. In addition, non-specific neck pain can be influenced by other factors such as genetics/heredity, psychological and social factors, lifestyle factors, and working positions. But with a thorough examination and with the correct treatment, it is certainly possible to get rid of the pain.
Physiotherapy for neck pain
We have used physiotherapy to treat many hundreds of patients with neck pain. Physiotherapy works incredibly well for neck pain. The treatment is based on a thorough examination, which also takes into account the interaction of the neck with the shoulder girdle, shoulder joint and elbow. It is far too superficial to look at the neck in isolation, as there are many other things that can lead to neck pain and soreness in the neck. The examination should therefore test the strength of all muscles and test the mobility of the entire upper body. The treatment then consists of regaining strength in the weak muscles and normalizing the mobility of the "locked" joints. This strategy tends to be extremely effective in treating neck pain.
