Physiotherapy for foot and ankle pain.

Physiotherapy for foot and ankle

We specialize in diagnosing and treating a wide range of foot and ankle conditions, from plantar fasciitis (heel spurs) and Achilles tendon problems to chronic instability following sprains. We understand that the foot is rarely the problem alone - its function is closely linked to the rest of the body. This holistic analysis allows us to identify the root cause of the pain, rather than just treating the symptom. Through specialized manual techniques and targeted rehabilitation, we restore optimal function and ensure long-term results.

Truly professional and innovative treatment. After several years of ankle pain, I am pain-free after just one treatment. After today's second treatment, I dare to start running again. I gave my friend a treatment. She was so excited too.

My experience was magical. I had severe pain in my achilles tendon. Lars identified a weak gluteal muscle. I averaged 20 km/day for the rest of the trip. He is basically a physio magician. I would give 6 stars if I could.

About foot and ankle pain

First of all, it is important that you have the cause of your pain examined by a physiotherapist with experience in this type of injury. This way, you can get a clear diagnosis, which is the prerequisite for an effective treatment course. We take pride in finding the underlying cause of your foot and ankle pain. Regardless of the diagnosis you come up with, the purpose of the treatment is the same; to create free mobility in the ankle and foot and to strengthen and activate all the muscles from the foot to the buttock. In this way, most pain disappears quickly and effectively. If it is a tendon injury, the treatment must be combined with specific strength training so that the tendon tissue can heal properly.

Plantar fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis or heel pain are one of the most common causes of pain under the foot. Heel spurs as it is also called are an overuse injury of the plantar fascie that develops over time. Therefore, they can also be difficult to get rid of, as tendons generally have difficult conditions for healing. However, we have good experience in treating heel spurs. First, it is important to identify the underlying cause of the heel spur. This can, for example, be due to weakness in the calf, hamstring and gluteal muscles or a locked ankle joint. Once we have treated the underlying cause, we can begin the specific rehabilitation of the plantar fascie tendon. The treatment is effective but requires a little patience.

Shin splints

Shin splints are most often seen in runners. The symptoms are typically pain on the inside of the shin. However, the pain can also manifest on the outside of the shin. It can often be a long-term condition if it is not treated properly. At the clinic, we see a lot of patients with shin splints, which is why we have good experience in treating this. The cause is typically weakness in the muscles of the lower leg. If, for example, the calf or the muscle in the front of the shin is weak, the small muscle on the inside of the shin will compensate and become overloaded, which can result in shin splints. It is therefore important to have this corrected before initiating specific treatment for the shin splints.

I can only recommend Copenhagen Physio. I have used Lars in two sessions 1½ years apart with great effect. I ran a marathon and could not have completed the marathon in Berlin in September 2017 without Lars's treatments. Had problems with a toe and foot.

Sprained ankle

A sprained ankle is one of the most common sports injuries. When you twist your ankle, the ligaments in the ankle are stretched. This most often happens on the outside of the ankle, but can also happen on the inside of the ankle. Most often, the injury and swelling go away on their own within 1-3 weeks. If it takes longer, it is often because the muscles in the lower leg have been deactivated, which worsens stability and maintains pain in the foot and ankle. At Copenhagen Physio, we have great success in activating the muscles on the front and outside of the shin, which improves stability and reduces pain. The treatment is then combined with strength training, balance training and mobilisation of the ankle joint.

Achilles tendon pain

Achilles tendon pain is a common injury and is most often seen in runners. Pain in the Achilles tendon typically builds up over time and can be difficult to get rid of. This is because the tendon tissue adapts slowly and requires targeted rehabilitation and sports physiotherapy. However, it is important to first find out why the pain and overload have occurred in the first place. This can, for example, be due to weak hamstring muscles (hamstrings). If the hamstrings are weak, the calf will try to compensate, as it is the second best muscle for bending the knee. In this way, the calf will be overloaded, which can result in damage to the Achilles tendon. Before starting specific strength training for the Achilles tendon, it is therefore important to first have the underlying cause identified by our competent physiotherapist.

Heel pain

Some of the most common causes of heel pain are heel spurs, Achilles tendonitis and irritation of the heel pad. The above diagnoses are the result of overuse over time. In order to effectively treat heel pain, it is essential to have a thorough examination so that you can get an accurate diagnosis. This way, you can target the treatment and rehabilitation so that you can become pain-free as quickly as possible. It is also important to investigate why the overuse has occurred. Is it due to weakness in the foot, ankle, hamstrings or buttocks? Or is it due to a locked ankle joint? At Copenhagen Physio, we offer thorough examination and effective treatment if you have heel pain.

Foot and ankle treatment

As we have discussed above, a thorough examination is a prerequisite for an effective course of treatment. There can be many reasons why you experience pain in the ankle and foot. This can be due, for example, to weak muscles in the lower leg and ankle, but can also be due to weak gluteal muscles or weak hamstrings. If the hamstring is weak, the calf will try to compensate, which can lead to overloading of the Achilles tendon or to heel spurs. Locking in the ankle, foot and knee can also cause pain. At Copenhagen Physio, we are thorough in our examination and always try to find the underlying cause of the pain. The treatment consists of manual treatment, muscle activation and specific strength training.
