Would you like to know more about acupuncture?
What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a treatment in which small, thin and sterile needles are inserted into the skin and into the muscles. Acupuncture originated in China, where it has been used for thousands of years to treat a wide range of ailments and pain issues.
A distinction is made between medical and Chinese acupuncture. In the West, we primarily use Medical Acupuncture, which is based on modern research and health science principles based on diseases, symptoms and pain. Chinese acupuncture is based on restoring balance in the so-called meridian pathways that run through the body. Here it is said that the life energy Qi must be able to flow unhindered through the meridian paths and thus create a natural flow in the body.
At Copenhagen Physio in Valby and Copenhagen, we primarily use medical acupuncture to treat pain in muscles and joints as well as sports injuries.
How does acupuncture work?
Acupuncture is done by inserting small needles into the skin and muscles. This stimulates the nervous system, which has several effects locally and systemically in the body. Acupuncture increases blood flow locally in the tissue and increases the secretion of pain-relieving hormones. In acupuncture, e.g. endorphins, which act like morphine, just without all the unfortunate side effects. An example of the pain-relieving effect of acupuncture is the hospitals, especially abroad, which use acupuncture for pain relief during surgery and births.
How fast does acupuncture work?
At Copenhagen Physio in Valby, we typically achieve good pain relief during 3-4 treatments. It is difficult to estimate how many treatments it takes to get 100% pain relief as it is very individually conditioned. However, most of them achieve the desired result during 4-8 treatments.
What injuries can be treated with acupuncture?
Acupuncture is particularly effective in treating injuries involving pain. Whether you have a lumbar sprain, a sports injury or have had chronic, chronic pain, acupuncture can be a solution. Acupuncture can stand alone, but works best as a supplement to other physiotherapeutic treatment.

Does it hurt to get acupuncture?
When the needles are inserted into the skin, you will feel a small sting reminiscent of being punched in the arm. The pain is very short-lived and in some cases can hardly be felt. After the insertion into the skin, you can feel a tingling or buzzing.
